About this symptom

This describes a marked rise in energy, activity or drive that is clearly different from a person's usual level, and is not explained by circumstance.

It may show as starting many projects, working through the night, cleaning or reorganising at unusual hours, talking to more people than usual, or simply being unable to stay still. Importantly, it is often not accompanied by tiredness at the time, which distinguishes it from ordinary busyness.

In mania this level of activity is severe enough to disrupt work, relationships or safety. In hypomania it is noticeable to others and represents a clear change, but is less disruptive. Both are distinguished from a good week by the change from baseline, the persistence over days, and the accompanying changes in sleep and thinking.

It can also follow from stimulants, some medications, and thyroid conditions, which is why assessment considers physical health and substances.
