Treatment overview
Coordinated specialty care is a team-based approach used particularly after a first episode of psychosis, bringing several forms of help together rather than delivering them separately.
A team typically combines medication management, psychological therapy, family education and support, and practical help with employment or education, with the person taking an active part in decisions about their own care.
Timing is central to why this approach is emphasised. Treatment earlier in the course of the condition is associated with better outcomes, and long delays between symptoms beginning and treatment starting are associated with worse ones. That is the reason seeking help promptly matters rather than waiting to see whether things settle.
Support with work and study is a deliberate component rather than an afterthought, because maintaining a role, income and routine strongly affects how well someone lives with the condition.
Availability varies considerably by country and region. Where such a service exists locally, a referral is usually made through mental health services or a general practitioner.
