Treatment overview

Family education and support provides relatives and carers with information about the condition, practical strategies for day-to-day situations, and support for themselves.

Its inclusion in treatment is evidence-based rather than a courtesy. Programmes involving families are associated with reduced relapse and better outcomes, and are recommended in authoritative treatment guidance.

Content typically covers what the condition is and is not, what helps during difficult periods, how to respond to distressing beliefs or voices without argument or dismissal, recognising early signs that things are changing, and how to look after one's own wellbeing while supporting someone else.

The framing matters. Families are involved because they are usually the most consistent support a person has, not because family caused the condition. Schizophrenia is not caused by upbringing or family behaviour, and older theories that held otherwise caused considerable harm.

Availability and format vary by country and locality. What is appropriate for a particular family is decided with a qualified health professional.
