Treatment overview
Guided self-help provides the content of cognitive behavioural therapy through structured materials - a workbook, an online programme, or both - with periodic support from a trained practitioner.
The support is what distinguishes it from self-help alone. Contact is typically brief and scheduled, used to review progress, troubleshoot difficulties and maintain momentum, rather than to deliver therapy in sessions. Outcomes are consistently better with that support than without it.
It is commonly offered as an early step in stepped-care systems, where people with less severe difficulties begin here and move to fuller therapy if needed. It suits people who prefer to work at their own pace, and can be available sooner than individual therapy where waiting lists are long.
It is not a lesser version of treatment for everyone, but it is not appropriate for every presentation. Whether it is a reasonable starting point is decided with a qualified professional.
